You don't buy a new kitchen for just a few years. It is a substantial investment that you will hopefully enjoy looking at for years to come. Of course you give careful thought to the layout, the appliances and how much storage space you need. But at least as important is the colour of your kitchen. To a large extent, that determines the atmosphere in your home. And however tempting that current trend colour may be, there is a very good chance that you will view it differently in a few years' time. Fortunately, a timeless kitchen does not have to be boring, white or beige at all. There are plenty of colours that have character and effortlessly stand the test of time.
Fewer trends, more timeless colours in your kitchen
Trends are fun. Until they disappear again. You see this not only in fashion, but also in interior design. A brightly coloured kitchen in those pink and bright blue shades that you suddenly see everywhere on Instagram might seem great right now. Yet chances are that you will look at it differently in five or ten years' time. If you prefer to choose a calm base with natural colours, you are often better off for longer. Think of soft green tones, warm earth tones, sand colour or wood tones. These are colours that do not quickly become boring and are also easy to combine if you ever want to change the rest of your interior.
Timeless kitchen colours (tips)
A kitchen really doesn't need to be white or beige to stay looking good for years. Colours that you also encounter in nature, in particular, often remain attractive for a long time. Think of warm sand tones, taupe, terracotta, clay colours or various shades of green. They form a calm base that you can easily combine with wood, natural stone and other natural materials. But make no mistake, such a neutral base doesn't have to be boring at all. With a colourful wall, striking accessories or a few nice charity shop finds, you can give your kitchen a unique look in no time. This way you can move with the trends, while the kitchen itself simply stays looking great.
A green kitchen Is there a lovely example of that. From soft sage green to deep olive green, green brings a bit of the outside in and gives the room a warm, relaxed feel. The great thing is that you can very easily adapt such a timeless base to your taste. For example, choose a bold colour for the wall (pink!) and finish it off with colourful accessories or nice second-hand finds from the charity shop. That way, you can keep giving your kitchen a fresh look, while the base remains beautiful for years to come.
Look beyond just the kitchen
A kitchen doesn't stand alone. It often flows seamlessly into the living room or dining room and therefore largely determines the atmosphere in the home. Therefore, don't just look at the colour of the kitchen cabinets, but also at the floor, the wall colour and your furniture. The better everything matches, the more peaceful the overall look. By the way, that doesn't mean everything has to be the same colour. Natural materials and different shades in particular create a warm and vibrant interior.
Choosing a kitchen colour? Above all, take your time
A choosing a kitchen colour might well be trickier than figuring out the layout. On a small colour swatch, a shade often looks very different than on a complete kitchen. The incidence of light in your home also plays a major role. A colour that looks warm and light in a sunny showroom can suddenly turn out a lot darker or cooler at home. Therefore, take colour swatches home and view them at different times of the day. Also place materials next to each other, such as a worktop, floor sample or the colour of your wall. This gives you a much more realistic picture of the end result and prevents you from thinking afterwards: if only I had chosen a different colour.
