Upcycling a vintage lampshade from the charity shop!
At thegreenlist.nl we are fans of reusing. And what we find even more fun is if you give something old a fresh, new look pass it on by upcycling it. A lamp is perfect for that. Such an item often makes quite a statement in your interior and buying a new one can be quite costly. In short, the ideal item to give a second life to.
By recovering an old lampshade, or even better: scoring one in the Recycling and to wrap it yourself with rope that genuinely makes you happy. By winding the rope around the frame, you create a completely new look. The light shines through it beautifully, creating a warm play of shadows on the wall. Jute, sisal or cotton work well for this. Go for natural tones or mix different colours for a playful effect. This lampshade shows that being sustainable doesn't have to be complicated at all.
Recovering an old lampshade with rope
Requirements

- glue (gun)
Instructions
- Remove the dust from the lampshade. Please note: with many lampshades, the frame consists only of a top ring and a bottom ring. The connection between them is often formed by sturdy lampshade foil. In that case, you can leave the foil in place and wrap the rope around it. You will get a different look, but not the effect where the light actually shines through the rope. In this example, a wall light with vertical connections in the frame has been used.
- Are there still glue residues on the frame? Then start by wrapping a vertical joint with twine. Secure the beginning with a small clamp or clothes peg.
- Wind the rope around the frame, always keeping the same direction. For example, from top to bottom and then back up again. Try to lay the rope tightly and neatly next to each other for a calm result. The thinner the rope, the more work it is, so bear that in mind.
- If you are going around, wrap the rope an extra time around the vertical connection for a neat finish.
- Secure the beginning and the end of the rope with a small drop from the glue gun.
- Reattach the lampshade to the holder and your upcycled lamp is ready.
