If you live in Friesland, Feintsje fan Menaam could easily become your new favourite place for local shopping. And if you are on holiday or out for the day in the province, this farm shop is a great spot to get acquainted with regional products. Friesland's largest farm shop is stocked with seasonal vegetables, fruit, cheese, eggs, meat, pulses, honey, mustard and Frisian drinks. Plenty to walk back out with a well-filled bag!
Shopping locally in Friesland: it doesn't get any more local than that!
At Little man from Menaam you don't just see what you are buying, but increasingly who made it too. On the special Grienteplein, there are vegetables from local growers with strikingly transparent price tags. These state which farmer the product comes from and what share of the selling price goes to him or her. This suddenly makes the short chain very tangible. Right in the middle of the shop you will also find an experiential kitchen, where they cook with products from the shop and from local farmers. We were given a workshop by Hilly from Hilarious, daughter of owners Jelmar and Grietje. We made hummus from the Kollumer sweet grey pea, an old Frisian regional crop, and a salad with naked oats. These oats are special because the husk comes off by itself during harvest. As a result, the grain no longer needs to be husked and can be used, for example, as a local alternative to rice.
You will find Feintsje fan Menaam at Bitgumerdyk 24 in Menaam. The shop is open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, so do check the current opening hours before you set off!
