To the Wadden Islands without catching the ferry? At Het Lage Noorden in Marrum you sleep right behind the sea dyke, among the meadows, salt marshes and endless Frisian skies. Dokkum is about a fifteen-minute drive away and the Wadden Sea is also just around the corner. You can pitch your own tent or park your caravan at the mini-campsite, but there are also guest rooms, a field cabin, a bell tent and two writers' cabins. We stayed in one of those writers' cabins, with its own small kitchen, bathroom and pellet stove. The decor, full of second-hand and vintage finds, makes it particularly atmospheric. Completely in keeping with a greener lifestyle, too.
Het Lage Noorden: a great place for people and animals
The story behind Het Lage Noorden also fits right up your green street. Founders Sandra and Stephan laid out the site in such a way that not only guests, but animals too feel at home there. For instance, a freshwater creek was added and not everything is constantly mown short, giving flowers, insects and other animals more space. Inside, you don't need to worry about a run-of-the-mill interior either: almost everything is second-hand. It is precisely all those vintage (particularly seventies) finds that make the place so atmospheric. And there is more to it than just sleeping. Artists can live and work there temporarily, while the canteen with terrace is a cosy meeting place for guests, local residents, walkers and cyclists. You can drop in for coffee, a treat or a drink. Opening hours vary by season. Just want to pop in? Then check the opening hours before you leave on the website of Het Lage Noorden.
And while you're there: climb the former grass silo too (if you dare). From the 25-metre-high viewing tower you look out over the Frisian coastal landscape and, on a clear day, even towards Ameland and Terschelling. Go and see for yourself!
