Who is thegreenlist.nl?

Thegreenlist.nl is the greener lifestyle magazine. With an emphasis on greener, because we want to entice everyone to join us. We want to show that living more sustainably is both important and fun, that you can still have just as many adventures and enjoy life. We are averse to finger-pointing and the don't-do-it-good-enough mentality.

Who is thegreenlist.nl for?

Thegreenlist.nl is here for everyone: dark green, light green and not yet green at all. But we particularly target women between 25 and 65 who are interested in a more sustainable, conscious and fun lifestyle, or who are exploring their options.

Who is behind thegreenlist.nl?

Thegreenlist.nl was founded by Saskia Sampimon-Versneij. Saskia is a trained journalist and has worked as a journalist and content creator in the media since 2006. In 2019, she made the shocking discovery that if everyone lived like she, an average Dutch person, four earths a year would be needed. Four earths? And we only have one! That made her decide to start exploring how to live more sustainably. From that intrinsic motivation thegreenlist.nl born. And that struck a chord with a wide audience.

Meanwhile, thegreenlist.nl grown into an ambitious greener media company where a motivated team works every day. Meet the team!

What colour green is thegreenlist.nl?

We don't particularly like pigeonholing, but going forward... Thegreenlist.nl is all shades of green. We share fun crafting tips with waste, easy veggie recipes, handy thrift shop tips and recommend fun days out. But we also like to delve deeper to find out how bad something really is. Palm oil, your foundation, cotton, cobalt, mica, you name it... The team consists of curious journalists and sustainable doers and we are happy to find out all about it for you.

How do you make editorial choices?

We understand that sustainability is a complex concept and includes many things such as climate change, environmental pollution, overconsumption, resource scarcity, animal suffering and inequality. We explain as best we can in what areas and how things are a more sustainable choice. In our view, things can already be a good idea if they address one or a few of the major problems. Not everyone will agree with us, but not every idea has to be perfectly green. We will always explain well how and to what extent something is/is not sustainable, so that our readers can make their own judgement on whether it is something for them.

Thegreenlist.nl is a media company. How does it make money?

Yes, the chimney has to smoke. Or well rather we generate energy with solar panels or wind turbines. But you know what we mean... All that research is labour-intensive, all that great content takes time to create and a website doesn't just stay up in the air either. In short, without revenue, no greener inspiration. We get our income from collaborations with companies, publishing our own media such as e-books, giving talks and via affiliate links* you sometimes come across in articles.

*These are links to webshops. It means that thegreenlist.nl receive a small commission if you buy something through this link, usually between 3% and 10%. A win-win situation: you get a direct link to beautiful sustainable products and, with your purchase, you support our research - which we prefer to continue for a very long time. We only link to products and sites we are fans of or support.

How is it determined whether companies you work with are sustainable (enough)?

Good question! We only work with companies where sustainability is at the core of their operations. You are a sustainable company if you are working on all aspects to do things more sustainably and better. It has your full focus, you can provide evidence of how you are doing things more sustainably and can also be honest and transparent about the aspects that are not yet perfectly sustainable - because there is no such thing as perfectly sustainable. So as far as we are concerned, a sustainable business goes beyond seemingly sustainable packaging or offsetting your activities. We also work with large companies that develop sustainable initiatives. We like to highlight those initiatives, because we believe it is precisely the big boys we need for system change. So we do not exclude those projects, but rather applaud them. There are also regularly charities that want to teamen with thegreenlist.nl. Yes, that match is obvious. We think so too.

Collaborations are often also about touting products and sales. How do you guys look at that?

Our mission is to give people as many ideas as possible for a more sustainable life, and that includes showing that there are more and more cool and better alternatives. After all, you also vote with your wallet. On the other hand, we also think it is important to pay enough attention to consumerism. We also share lots of tips on how to cut down, reuse and score stuff second-hand. In the end, it's all about balance and only you can determine that yourself. However, we can help advise better choices and provide tips on how to achieve that balance.

How do you handle goodies you get (un)solicited from companies and PR agencies?

We also find this a tricky issue. Saskia once as a statement, have a cool jacket made from all fabric bags which she received unsolicited. At least that way, all those bags still got a good use... When PR agencies approach us asking if they can send something, we ask what exactly is in the package. If necessary, they take out branded goodies like T-shirts, caps, bags, cups. By the way, we never say no to branded socks... We also take the following approach: whatever we receive from companies or PR agencies, solicited or unsolicited, is always put to good use. We use it ourselves, eat it, give it away or donate it to charity. Sometimes we make arrangements with companies and can borrow and return stuff for campaigns. We want to do this only if companies can promise not to throw it away. (That unfortunately often happens with products that go back because it is too much hassle to prepare it for sale again).
