The IJ-Hallen review.

Day out in Amsterdam? Head to the IJ-Hallen!

Amsterdam's IJ-Hallen are a paradise for second-hand lovers and the place to score the most unique second-hand items. Whether you are looking for a vintage interior piece, a special outfit, or just fancy a fun day: this flea market in Amsterdam-North is the place to be. We also enjoy coming there and have some insider tips for you.

IJ-Hallen: the Valhalla for second-hand shopping enthusiasts

Every month - and sometimes more often (check the agenda!) - held at the iconic NDSM wharf in Amsterdam North. From Amsterdam Central Station, take the free ferry to the NDSM wharf, a trip that is an experience in itself. Within a few minutes you are in this raw, creative part of Amsterdam. From the dock, it's a maximum five-minute walk to the market. Just follow the mob, you can't miss it! This industrial part of Amsterdam is a breeding ground for creativity, with cool initiatives, street art and fine restaurants. Think tough hoisting cranes, colourful graffiti and a raucous Berlin vibe which makes the area so unique.

In and around the IJ-Hallen, you will find more than five hundred stalls to check out. In short, heaven for lovers of second-hand shopping and bargain hunters. In the summer months, you can browse outside, while in winter the stalls move inside the large sheds. Note: it can be chilly here, so dress warmly! We have collected more tips to prepare for a flea market for you here.

Our tip: Come early, with an early bird ticket you can get in as early as 6:00am and be the first to hunt for bargains. Start at the back and slowly work your way to the front to find the best treasures.

Lunch at the IJ-Hallen

All that browsing and strolling will make you hungry, and fortunately there are plenty of fine spots nearby. For a cup of coffee, lunch or drinks right next door is Zeal an excellent choice. Prefer to enjoy the view over the IJ? Then sustainable hotspot Pllek and Northern Lights Café real recommendable on the other side of the site. A few minutes away, by the ferry, you will find IJ-Canteen. Here you can also sit comfortably and enjoy people-watching. For another circular lunch spot The Ceuvel definitely worth the diversions. Making reservations at these hotspots is smart, especially on busy market days!

Bonus tip: Do you still have energy left after browsing? Then visit the Street Museum, where you can see impressive street art can admire. You might recognise this place from the TV show The Perfect Picture, which has recorded a season here. The museum, set up by the same promoters as the IJ-Hallen, is a great end to your day in Amsterdam North.
