DIY Christmas baubles made with scraps of fabric

Do you also have one of those boxes of Christmas stuff that you get a bit bored of every year? Chances are there are balls that you once loved, but now end up in the back of the tree. A shame, because with a few simple fabric scraps you can breathe new life into them in no time. And the best part? Each ball will be different and completely your style.

DIY fabric baubles

You know the drill: that box full of baubles, half of which never actually make it back to the tree. Just not your colour, too much glitter, or just... sááái. Don't throw them away! With some leftover fabric and a ribbon, you can give them a second chance. And how! This DIY is simple, cosy and surprisingly stylish. In no time, you can make unique baubles that perfectly match your Christmas look. And it is also a sustainable choice. No buying new stuff, just be creative with what you already have. Put on some Christmas music, lay out some cloth, and within no-time you have a tree full of personal showpieces.

DIY Christmas baubles made with scraps of fabric: this is how to give your tree a completely new look, without buying anything new.

Sprucing up old baubles with fabric

From velvet to linen, from minimalist to colourful: you can do anything with fabric. Leftovers from your sewing chest, an old shirt or a worn-out tea towel? Anything goes, as long as it's supple. Go for playful frayed edges by tearing the fabric instead of cutting it or make it neat and classic with a tight ribbon. No needle or thread needed: just knot, wrap, tie and done. This DIY will give your Christmas tree character, without costing you anything (except a little creativity).

Tools

  • old baubles
  • fabric scraps(Think old tea towels, a worn blouse, patches from the fabric shop)
  • ribbons or strings

Instructions

  • Cut a square from the fabric and fit it around the bauble to determine if it is big enough.
  • Want a frayed effect? Tear the fabric instead of cutting. That way you can be sure you are straight of thread and you can pull threads loose on all sides for a cool frayed edge. Note: this only works with woven fabrics such as linen and cotton.
  • Wrap the fabric around the ball and tie it securely at the top with a ribbon or string.
  • Gently pull the fabric tips on top so that the fabric sits nice and tight and evenly around the ball.
  • Finish it off with a bow or a decorative cord.
  • Prefer no bulges at the top? Then cut a round from the fabric (use a saucer as a mould) and drape it over the ball, tied tightly on top.
