We love sustainable apps

Whether you are just starting to live more sustainably or are already well on your way with a sustainable lifestyle; dilemmas are inevitable. There you are standing in the shop doubting which shampoo is the best. Or you don't know which bin that pizza box should go in... Recognisable? This is something we all really suffer from. Your sustainable lifestyle becomes much easier with the right apps on your smartphone or tablet. Sustainability done easy! I go through a few handy sustainable apps with you. These are really going to make your sustainable life a lot easier.

Sustainable apps for food

Too Good To Go

The app to combat food waste. One of the easiest and tastiest ways to eat more sustainably is by reducing food waste. And the great thing is; more and more supermarkets, restaurants and hotels are signing up to Too Good To Go. They then offer their excess food through this app for a small price. And you can then save those groceries or meals for a soft price: vegetables, fruit, bread and sometimes even ready-made meals. This way, you eat well, avoid food waste and save money. Want to know more about this? Then check out this article, because there is much more to tell about this fun app!

Happy Cow

With the sustainable app Happy Cow always opt for sustainable eating out. Because vegetarian and plant-based food is not yet the standard everywhere. That is why Happy Cow makes it easy for you by providing an overview of the best veg(n) restaurants in the city or region you are visiting. And Happy Cow's community seems to have been everywhere in the world. So you're never short of a good restaurant tip. Let Happy Cow be your foodie guide to eating-out-with-a-good-conscience!

Game Picking Guide

Do you enjoy picking fruit, vegetables and nuts in the wild? With the Game Picking Guide you will know exactly where to find them. You will also be helped with the flowering and harvesting times of wild apples, blackberries or cucumbers. Thus, with the help of the app, you can pick elderflower screens almost anywhere in June for a delicious elderflower lemonade or cocktail. Check out this self-picking recipe to make delicious elderflower lemonades and cocktails.

A handy app if you are going wild picking is the wild picking guide.

Sustainable apps that let you shop second-hand

Marketplace

Sustainable shopping from the couch is, of course, what you do with Marketplace. Whether you are looking for the finest second-hand furniture, gifts, toys, clothes or gadgets, you will find it all. This top-notch app makes it easy to find the most wonderful second-hand stuff in your own neighbourhood. Could you use some help finding the most beautiful gems? We get you started with this article.

Vinted

For finding the finest second-hand clothes, including for children, is Vinted the best app. And the great thing about Vinted is that you have an extensive amount of filters, allowing you to search very specifically. So are you looking for a fuchsia-pink longsleeve in new condition size 42? Vinted is the app that makes searching and finding very easy. It makes it really easy to complete your sustainable wardrobe. Find out how to find second-hand clothes from Dutch Vinted sellers faster in this article.

Peerby

Everyone having their own chainsaw in their shed is SO old-fashioned. Borrowing is the new buying! Because your neighbours, fellow villagers and townspeople are happy to lend it to you. Sometimes for free, sometimes for a small fee. So from a chain saw to an air mattress, from a construction lamp to an extendable ladder; you can find it all on the app Peerby.

Sustainable apps for personal care products

Beat the Microbead

Unfortunately, many personal care products contain microplastics. These are deliberately added to make it nice and spreadable. Microplastics are much talked about, as they do not seem particularly healthy and they are certainly not good for the environment. OK, products without microplastics are preferable. But how do you find them? With the handy free app Beat The Microbead this is not at all difficult. You take a picture of the ingredients list and the app does the rest.

Think Dirty, Clean Beauty & INCI Beauty

Kind of the same idea, but slightly different. Think Dirty, Clean Beauty and INCI Beauty are handy free apps where you can check the ingredients of your skincare products. You take another photo and the app does the rest. Really very handy!

The Clean Beauty app lets you quickly see what ingredients are in your make-up and what they mean.

Other sustainable apps

  • Ecosia: sustainable search engine. You don't often think about it, but all that searching on Google consumes a lot of energy and therefore CO2 emissions. Because, unfortunately, search engine data centres worldwide still mostly run on grey energy. But fortunately, there is an alternative. With the green search engine from Ecosia you will also find what you are looking for, but on renewable energy. Ecosia also plants trees in exchange for your search.
  • Waste separation guide: waste first aid. Separating your waste can sometimes seem like an insurmountable hurdle. Where does that broken glass go? And which bin does that used pizza box go in? Don't worry! The Waste separation guide from Milieu Centraal has an answer for every question. So you can separate your waste even better in your green, blue, orange, and black wheelie bin.
  • Pl@ntNet and Obsidentify: the plant apps! Do you like to know what flora you will encounter when you go hiking or cycling? Then Pl@ntNet or Obsidentify your go-to apps. With these apps, you take a picture of a plant. And immediately know which species you are dealing with.
  • EnergyFlip: the energy manager. The high cost of gas and electricity is hitting everyone's wallet. As a result, everyone also seems to be looking for ways to reduce energy consumption. To really take steps, it is useful to have real-time insight into your consumption. Only then can you really adjust your behaviour. Measuring is knowing, right? In that case, EnergyFlip offers a solution, an energy consumption manager with a handy app developed together with the Consumers' Association. This system goes even (much) further than a smart meter. We tested it extensively.

The app Too Good To Go that lets you save wonderful groceries at a bargain price. We have listed more tips for saving food for you here.
