Haarlem offers a plethora of coffee shops, eateries and fine dining restaurants. It would give you acute choice stress. So how do you pick out the greener addresses? Well, they go the extra mile. That's what we think is really tasty. We have listed the best discoveries for you. Perfect for a sustainable day out in Haarlem, because we also have the second-hand shopping addresses in this city for you!

New Vegas

New Vegas is Haarlem's first fully vegan restaurant and rightly calls itself ‘The Veganizers’. Here, it's not about what you don't eat, but what you do get: recognisable classics with a plant-based twist. From a generous burger with vegan cheese to a 3D-printed steak and ‘cheese fondue’ made of cashew nuts, everything is 100% plant-based. The atmosphere is relaxed. Perfect for dinner with friends or a cosy drink with a few bites. You'll find New Vegas a stone's throw from the Grand Place.

Koningstraat 5, Haarlem

City beach the Oerkap

On the Spaarne - the calm water that winds right through Haarlem - you'll find one of the city's most chill spots: Oerkap. A fine beach bar where you plop down in the sand overlooking the water and enjoy a casual atmosphere. The menu is simple but thoughtful: a wide choice of vegetarian tagliatelles and pizzas and original vegetarian appetisers such as cauliflower bites, risottini and pitas with dips. Everything is freshly prepared with love for flavour and ingredients. Also cool is the drinks menu: Jopen beer on tap, wines from Grape District and lemonades from Roze Bunker. Whether you stop by for a coffee in the sun, drinks with friends or an or an evening with live music - this is always the place to be.

Harmenjansweg 95, Haarlem

Menu Corridor

In a special place, in the former administration building of the old domed prison, you will find Menu Corridor. As soon as you walk into the corridor with its open kitchen, you imagine yourself in a French bistro. The menu features many seasonal dishes, vegetarian options, local fish and some meat options. In short, really a night out for two, but also a nice place to go with a group. Just book a table in advance, because you're not the only one curious about their shared dining and extensive wine list.

The Cloister Kitchen

Tucked away in a historic building just outside the city centre, is The Cloister Kitchen. This restaurant was recently renovated and made more sustainable. For example, it no longer uses gas. The menu has also changed: the number of dishes has been reduced so that less food is thrown away and the broth is drawn from leftover vegetable peels. Vegetarian options on the menu have been expanded. Extra fun is the service: this is an apprenticeship for young people who have dropped out of mainstream education for whatever reason. They now work under the guidance of experienced chefs.

Hagestraat 12, Haarlem

Jetties

If you walk from Haarlem station to the city centre, you will pass by Jetties. The location makes it ideal to pop in here before or after a day of shopping in Haarlem for a drink, lunch or dinner. The menu features delicious juices, homemade cake and lots of vegetarian options for lunch and dinner. In summer, they also sell locally produced ice cream here. Delicious!

Kruisweg 57, Haarlem

The roof greenhouse

Tucked away atop a city centre car park is The roof greenhouse. The entrance takes some searching, but after all the stairs you suddenly find yourself in a beautiful place. From this restaurant you have a great view over the whole city, from the greenhouse or from the terrace. The restaurant has its own vegetable garden and keeps chickens and bees on the terrace. And they have a much wider vegetable garden where organic vegetables are grown that go straight to the restaurant. Lunch, drinks or dinner: there is a wide choice of vegetarian and vegan dishes, but meat or fish is also an option. Enjoy your food while watching the Haarlem skyline looks. This is unique!

They work with as much seasonal organic produce from local suppliers here as possible. Located in the heart of the city centre, this lunch café has a lovely terrace overlooking shoppers on Zijlstraat. And they have it all: delicious coffee, vegan cakes, salads and sandwiches, not to mention a high tea. Reservations are not possible here, but the cheerful service will gladly help you get a seat!

Grow Cafe

The cosy Grow Cafe is located in Haarlem's green oasis: the city nursery garden. The café is in a greenhouse with a wooden floor and a mix of vintage chairs and sofas. This makes it a unique place for a coffee, vegetarian lunch or drinks. If you're lucky, the house cat will also come and snuggle with you. Kids along? No problem! This place is a walhalla for children with a play corner, playground and a gnome trail. Next to the café is the Kweekstraat, where sustainable and circular entrepreneurs have found their place. Every month, the city farm garden hosts an organic market with local products and regularly organises sustainable events. Find more kid tips in Haarlem here.
