At thegreenlist.nl we love second-hand gifts. So during the holidays, we sprinkle with recycling tips, vintage finds and other original second-hand gift ideas. But we also know what many readers struggle with: how do you give a second-hand gift in such a way that it feels fun and festive? Especially if the original packaging is missing, or the item is just not immaculate. Don't worry, we have dealt with this problem before, so we definitely have some good ideas.
Second-hand gifts for the holidays: the giving as well as the wrapping
There are actually two parts to pay attention to: the moment of giving, and the way of wrapping. We can be brief about the giving: make no secret of the fact that the gift is second-hand. In fact, make it something to be proud of. Add that you consciously looked for a sustainable gift and chose this item with care. What helps? A nice label with something like ‘handpicked for you’ or ‘preloved’. Then the gift itself tells half the story - and that makes it even more fun to give. And hey, that's already our first wrapping tip. But of course we have more...
Smart wrapping tips for second-hand gifts (for young and old)
Okay, so you've found the perfect second-hand gift. Now it's just a matter of making the giving a party. These tips will help you steal the show this festive season. Whether it's children's toys or a vintage vase for your mother-in-law.
Check that everything is complete and working
Especially with toys: nothing is more frustrating than a game without dice or something that needs batteries, but whose batteries are dead - preventing you from playing with it right away. So always check that everything is complete, that it still works and give it a little refurbishment where necessary.
Give the gift a little refresher
Sprucing up and freshening up does wonders. Put a garment in the wash, polish a vase or picture frame, wipe a book with a dry cloth or wipe a damp cloth over a wooden toy. It doesn't have to look brand-new, but if it looks fresh and cared for, the gift immediately feels much more festive.
Wrap a second-hand gift coolly
Choose nice wrapping paper - you can find it at good bookshops and sustainable concept stores. Go for sturdy paper, not that cheap, thin paper that tears easily. You can also choose more sustainable wrapping paper (read our tips here!). Even more fun: use reusable materials such as a piece of fabric, an old map or even a stylish newspaper. Combine that with a cool piece of string, a mini pine branch or a lucky doll and you have a present that could be in a Christmas shop window in no time. Need extra help? Make your own packaging
No original box? No worries. (Children's) shoeboxes or packs of previous packages are often just the right size and sturdy enough for toys or other fragile gifts. Don't have anything at home? Ask around - someone in your neighbourhood is bound to have a box lying around. Otherwise, a call in a local Facebook group often works wonders. Decorate the box with washi tape, stickers or a lick of paint and you have a unique gift box. Also fun: reusable fabric bags, such as those for fruit and vegetables. Super handy for storing a collection of small gifts or loose parts - think Lego, doll accessories or beads. Looks cosy ánd keeps everything neatly together.
Finally: give second-hand gifts with flair at the holidays
Giving second-hand might be different, but that makes it all the more original. With a little preparation, a fresh look and nice packaging, you can turn it into a personal and festive gift in no time. And the best part? You show that you have searched, chosen and given with care. So own it, that preloved pearl. Give it proudly and let the present shine under the Christmas tree or in St Nicholas' burlap sack.
