We're actually a bit ashamed that we haven't tipped Villa Augustus earlier. After all, we love coming here. Saskia has even slept there before. And yet this gem is only now on the greener list. Anyway, better late than never - and this tip is one from the heart. What a wonderful place to eat, sleep, in short, just be. Villa Augustus is located in an old waterworks building, surrounded by a gigantic vegetable garden that you can wander through. Here, you literally experience the seasons first-hand. So: go.
Villa Augustus: an unpretentious, sustainable restaurant
At Villa Augustus, everything is about fresh, local and with attention. The restaurant cooks as much as possible with ingredients from its own garden or from organic farmers in the neighbourhood. You literally taste the season on your plate: from summer courgette flowers to winter stew with parsnips. Vegetarian and vegan are well represented on the menu, but it is not a strict policy: there is also room for a piece of fish or meat, as long as it is responsible. Villa Augustus does not feel like a hip sustainable concept, but a natural way of life. Unpretentious. And that is perhaps the best part.

Another sustainable sleeping tip
Besides eating delicious food and wandering through the kitchen garden, you can also stay overnight at Villa Augustus. Highly recommended, as Dordrecht is a surprisingly nice city for a city break. And the windmills of Kinderdijk are practically around the corner. (By the way, we have collected our Dordrecht tips for you here!) You can stay in the old waterworks building - a bucket list thingy - or in the garden rooms in the outbuilding. We slept in a family room in the annexe, which has its advantages: you are on the ground floor, right next to the vegetable garden, with a private terrace ánd it is just as atmospheric. And don't forget the Villa Augustus shop. It is full of kitchen utensils, books, organic delicacies and those typical Villa Augustus things that make your heart jump. Every season feels different here, so feel free to come back more often without ‘having seen it all’.

Stay overnight in style at Villa Augustus. We stayed in a family room in the garden, but there are also rooms in the old water tower!
