Loving recipes with jackfruit

Jackfruit is a fruit that can be used in many ways in the kitchen. Not surprisingly, you see it more and more often on the menus of trendy restaurants and you also find it in the supermarket canned often encountered. This tropical fruit, native to South and Southeast Asia, has a stringy flesh-like texture reminiscent of pulled pork or chicken. The fruit has little flavour of its own, but it absorbs herbs and spices perfectly. Yes, jackfruit rendang is definitely on our list. Wait for it.

Although jackfruit is not a good meat substitute - it lacks too much iron, protein and B12 for that - it does fit nicely as a variation in a healthy diet. Jackfruit is rich in vitamin C, vitamin A, B6, folic acid, potassium, magnesium and calcium. And earlier we learned from a jackfruit expert that cultivation is a lot more environmentally friendly than is usually the case. ‘Jackfruits just grow wild all year round in Asia. They need little water, have little pest and disease problems and they protect other plants. So something like endless plantations that are disastrous for our planet does not occur with jackfruit.’ In short, plenty of reasons to put jackfruit on the menu more often and we are happy to bring you some recipe ideas.
