The ball is in your court: you are going to sell your stuff at a flea market, car boot sale, free market or other fun fair. How are you going to go about it? Use these tips to create the best, cutest, most cosy flea market dress and attract lots of visitors to āyour shopā. Lots of fun!
The most beautiful flea market rug
In the run-up to King's Day, I am preparing our flea market rug. I am doing this together with my little son (7). He is really looking forward to selling his stuff with me and adding to his piggy bank. And so I just started planning our flea market rug: what will we sell and how will we stand out with our rug? I also asked my followers on Instagram also to their ideas for this and that resulted in this list. Top!
Tips for your flea market rug
- Make sure you arrive well in time so you can get a nice spot. Knowing how to find a good spot is half the battle!
- Attract buyers' attention by making it cosy. Choose a good rug, hang flags, make eye-catching cardboard signs with nice texts and arrange a nice music for some atmosphere. A free grab bag for kids always does well too.
- Get a large rug in an eye-catching colour. But don't choose a rug with a busy print, as you might not see the items properly.
- Provide structure on your rug. Say you are selling children's stuff for different ages, make sure each age is together. This way, you help a buyer who will probably be looking for more things in a specific category.
- Provide overview by creating heights. One tip is to use (fruit) crates or stools where you put things on and then put things on the rug (lower) in front of them. That way, buyers can quickly scan things from low (at their feet) to high.
- Several followers tip that pricing items is definitely advisable, so buyers know where they stand. You can also make piles and put signs next to them: all these items cost the same amount, that way you don't have to price everything separately. If you want to get rid of your items, it is advisable not to price too high and be prepared to negotiate.
- Clothing on a clothes rack shops more pleasantly and so you will attract more people to your dress.
- Totally a topper you are if you have a mirror and can create a private corner for a quick fitting.
- Bring a charged phone and possibly a power bank. You will need your phone to make payments at the flea market. That banking app on your phone with QR code is super handy to make payments with. That way you don't have that hassle with small change.
- Are you dying for fabric bags? Take them with you! Many unprepared buyers will thank you for having a bag on offer.
- Some followers tipped that you shouldn't put everything on your flea market rug. I absolutely disagree with that. You know the peak of buyers will be in the morning. Make sure you put all your stuff down right away to increase your chances of selling.
- Unfortunately, sometimes there are also thieves at flea markets. Therefore, do not put valuable items at the front (with the buyer). And if you sell nice shoes, I have a tip for that as well: always keep one shoe behind, that way you don't give thieves a chance to steal nice shoes.

Making money at the flea market or Kings Day free market can also be done (right) by coming up with all kinds of things besides selling old stuff, such as a lemonade sale or a live compliment box. For 50 cents, you get a compliment and thus a smile.
Children's activities on a flea market rug
An extra activity is not only a fun way to earn an extra penny, it also attracts extra people to your rug. My followers had some original tips for a free market rug:
- Playing a game of Jenga, memory or some other game with passers-by for fifty cents.
- Bake cupcakes in advance to sell along with lemonade.
- Does your child play an instrument? Then go make your own music next to the rug.
- Create a funny photobooth including rack of dress-up clothes where, for fifty cents, people can take a fun photo that you take with their own phone.
- Organising old Dutch games.
- A living compliment box also works really well with kids, everyone thinks it's cute (see photo).
