By Kees: vegetarian and vegan lunch in Heerenveen

The best of Heerenveen? Tipped off so often by you, but we just don't get to Heerenveen that quickly. So once we were in the area, we had to go to By Kees, of course. Not only because followers recommended it en masse, Guido Wyers is also a big fan. After his show, he popped in and reported extensively on Instagram, which we could not ignore. So hup, when we were in the area, we went straight there. And spoiler: the best lunch in ages!

A Scandinavian atmosphere with Frisian flair

At By Kees, it's all about good coffee, honest ingredients and a warm welcome. They don't call themselves a ‘good food café’ for nothing. The place feels like a Scandinavian home magazine: minimalist and stylish, yet cosy. Light wooden furniture, calm colours and lots of greenery. And all in the heart of Heerenveen. The coffee? That is specialty coffee - top quality beans, perfectly roasted and great brewed. Yes, with latte art. So not a cup of comfort at Kees's, but a real experience. The kind you feel comfortable making a diversion for. The chai latte with oat milk was perhaps the best we ever drank. Seriously. A cinnamon bomb...

The tastiest lunch spot in Heerenveen?

When we told them we were heading for Heerenveen, followers immediately said: ‘Oh, then you must have lunch at By Kees!’ And they were right. It really is one of those places you can make a detour for if you are even in the neighbourhood. Because a lunch spot like this? You don't come across those very often. Not even in the Randstad - so rarely good and tasteful. Everything at By Kees is made with care, from the homemade cranberry tart to the chocolate-dairy-banana variety. Even the tea comes from their own garden or from the local farmer. The menu is full of surprising combinations that show that vegetarian and vegan food is anything but boring. How about sourdough bread with beetroot, orange, tahini and a swirl of basil sauce? Or one with guacamole, tomatoes and mango pepper sauce? You can taste that everything is fresh, locally sourced and prepared with love.
