At thegreenlist.nl we love coffee. We prefer to drink it with a frothy head of oat milk on a sunny terrace, but of course we can't do that every day. And so we are delighted with the Baristina espresso machine from Philips. With it, we bring the holiday feeling into our homes every day. We call it ‘a barista living on the kitchen counter’.
The Baristina: the barista on your kitchen counter
In cooperation with Philips
Throw your favourite coffee beans into the machine, swipe the colourful lever, and within seconds you'll be enjoying a perfect cup of coffee, just like you'd be served on a sunny terrace. The machine automatically grinds the beans, the portafilter presses the ground coffee just right for an intense aroma, and with a 16-bar pressure pump, you brew a cup that tastes like it was made by a barista himself. It's that simple: coffee and that relaxed weekend feeling in one move.

Review of Baristina coffee machine from Philips.
Coffee bean machine, a more sustainable choice
At thegreenlist.nl we naturally like to think about how we can make things more sustainable at home and in the office. And that daily cup of coffee naturally also has a footprint (or food footprint?) that we would like to reduce. This bean machine not only serves you - à la a barista in your favourite coffee bar - great coffee, it also saves a lot of waste. Because all you buy is a big bag of coffee beans. By the way, we have written about the environmental impact of coffee before.
Better coffee beans in your Baristina
So with that machine, you're fine. Then the question is: which beans do you pour in? Choose beans with a good label such as Rainforest Alliance (you know, the green frog) or Fairtrade. You don't have to make a detour for this, as making a more sustainable choice in the supermarket is not at all difficult. In fact, on the shelf you will find plenty of choice of coffee beans with one of these labels. Even some house brands have a good label. Great! Once you get home, it's smart to store those coffee beans well, that way they retain their flavour even after the bag has been opened. Invest in a clip that allow you to seal the bag tightly, or vacuum your beans in a bottle. We have written about food vacuuming before. See here.
Opting for coffee beans is also more economical for your wallet!
An average price of a coffee cup is 0.45 cents. A kilo of certified coffee beans, such as HEMA private label, La Place or PLUS private label, starts at around EUR 13. From this you can make - say - 125 cups of coffee. Say you drink three cups of coffee a day, switching from cups to coffee beans could save you over EUR 300 a year.

Good coffee habits: choose labelled coffee and coffee grounds are super good food for plants - so don't throw them away!
Coffee grounds, the black gold
Finally, a tip on the coffee grounds. What do you do with it? Don't throw it away! Put a container next to your beautiful Baristina, so you can knock the coffee grounds out of your portafilter in one quick movement and reuse it! Use it as a food source for oyster mushrooms you can grow yourself on your kitchen counter, sprinkle it on your house or garden plants. They will thank you with that extra nutrition!
Coffee grounds, a booster!
Coffee grounds are excellent plant nutrients because they are rich in nutrients such as nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus, which are essential for plant growth. It improves soil structure, aerates the soil and helps with water drainage. Earthworms love it, which further improves soil quality, and it acts as a natural defence against pests such as snails. Moreover, reusing coffee grounds is a sustainable way to reduce waste and make your garden more eco-friendly. So don't throw away your coffee grounds, but give your plants a boost!
