Hair products, such as hair gel and hair wax, are often unsustainable and not free of substances you might prefer not to use. You can also make these yourself using natural ingredients. Zero waste expert Emily-Jane went to work herself and shares her DIY recipe for hair wax with us. Making your own hair wax? Here's how to do it!

Making your own hair wax

From detergent, all-purpose cleaner and deodorant it is well known that you can make these yourself at home. Not difficult at all! But that you can also make your own hair wax, many people don't know. Styling your hair can also be done just fine using natural ingredients and is a nice zero waste hack, since hair wax normally comes in a plastic jar, of course. I share with you my favourite recipe.

Zero waste recipe: make your own hair wax

You can buy ready-made hair wax in a jar, but with a few ingredients you can also make it at home. And it's really easy too, it turns out. This tip belongs in the list of sustainable, zero waste budget tips.

Tools

  • pan for heating
  • sealable jar

Materials

  • 12 gr beeswax (or 6 g candelilla wax for vegans)
  • 30 gr coconut oil
  • 10 gr shea butter
  • 6 gr argan oil
  • pair drops essential oil of your choice optional

Instructions

  • Put all the ingredients in a glass jar and put it in a pan with a splash of water on the stove. Heat until everything is melted.
  • Stir together and add another five to 10 drops of essential oil of your choice, if needed.
  • Pour the hot liquid into a jar and let it cool. After cooling, screw on the lid. You can store the hair wax for six months.
