Finding sustainable skincare can be quite complicated, there is unfortunately a lot of deception in the beauty industry. Products may seem sustainable or eco-friendly, but they are not at all. Also, terms like ‘100% natural care’ or ‘vegan’ do not have to say anything at all about environmental impact. For that, you really need to look at the overall picture. One sustainable beauty brand that definitely belongs in the greener list is Food for Skin. Natural skin care with no mess made from leftover vegetables!
Sustainable skin care from Food for Skin
In partnership with Food for Skin
Those who like to choose beauty products that are more eco-friendly know how difficult it can be. Dutch sisters Angela and Cathy thought so too and so they set out to investigate whether they could market their own beauty brand that would show that things can be done differently. In that, they succeeded! Food for Skin skin care, in which leftover vegetables play the starring role, is here to stay. They have even won an award with it already! And at a rapid pace, the ladies are developing new products. Besides the day cream, cleanser and serum it all started with, they now have a great sun protection tapping all the durable boxes and a delicious lip care.
Microplastic-free beauty products from rescued vegetables
Food for Skin skincare products have a special story. This is because Angela and Cathy discovered that vegetables are not only healthy to eat, they can also play an important role in keeping your skin healthy. After all, your skin is your largest organ. In a laboratory, they developed their secret formula: sustainable skincare from natural ingredients in which leftover vegetables play a major role. They worked on their formula for two years. In fact, the products contain oils from all kinds of vegetable (seeds) such as leftover tomatoes, leftover avocados that are too ugly for consumption but certainly no less effective, pumpkin, cucumber, carrot and broccoli extracts can be found in the jars.

Food for Skin's skincare is obviously free of microplastics and other crap and it is vegan. Food for Skin is determined to implement sustainability throughout its operations, not for nothing are they pending to secure a B Corp certification, a key certification for sustainable businesses (Update 2023: they are now certified - hooray!). Plastic Soup Foundation has even given the products the ‘Zero Plastics Inside’ seal of approval! Above all, the ladies want to continue developing: their mission will not be accomplished until all the main ingredients come from circular streams!
No more stress of choice with eco-friendly skincare
Food for Skin likes to keep the range simple and so the daily skincare range consists of three skincare products sufficient to cleanse, protect and nourish: a carrot cleanser (35.95 euros), a tomato base cream (39.95 euros) for all ages and three serums (one for each age group) (37.95 euros). For those keen to try first, smaller sample kits are available (28.95 euros for all three). This is specially designed to avoid waste. The products are gender neutral and suitable for both women's and men's skin!
Also spreading vegetables on your skin from Food for Skin?
Since I buy my beauty products more sustainably, I regularly find myself asking: how sustainable is it (really)? And that's why I always get very happy with local entrepreneurs like these with a sustainable mission. Summing up what to put on your skin with Food for Skin:
- 100% natural: a Dutch brand that develops skincare based on 100% natural (and organic) ingredients, namely: vegetables!
- Simple: three products to take care of your skin. With these three products you can: cleanse, protect and nourish. They also have fantastic sun protection and gentle lip care.
- (Circular) Vegetables: Food for Skin aims to make all its main ingredients circular. This means they use vegetables from residual streams as much as possible.
- Recycled plastic and biophotonic glass: products are packed in recycled plastic that is easily recyclable or in glass, which ensures a longer shelf life. The glass is recyclable via the bottle bank. The shipping box (made of recycled cardboard) is not printed, to encourage reuse.
- Women: they support female leadership and prefer to work with companies run by ladies.
