Is je balkon of tuin toe aan een mini make-over? Of heb je nieuwe planten gekocht die nog zielig in hun plastic kweekpotjes staan? Nieuwe bloempotten zijn vaak duur, maar goed nieuws: er staat een kringloopvondst of vergeten pot klaar om jouw nieuwe eye-catcher te worden. Met een beetje verf en fantasie maak je iets heel bijzonders van oude plantenpotten.
Oude plantenpotten een tweede leven geven
Bloempotten zijn er in overvloed – loop een willekeurige kringloopwinkel in en je struikelt er letterlijk over. Toch blijven ze vaak liggen. Waarom? Omdat we meestal alleen de buitenkant zien: vies, beschadigd, ouderwets. Maar kijk daar doorheen en je ziet vooral potentie. Veel van die potten zijn gemaakt van keramiek, kunststof of beton – materialen die flink wat energie en grondstoffen kosten om te produceren. Door ze te hergebruiken geef je ze een langer leven, voorkom je onnodig afval én maak je er iets van dat niemand anders heeft. Wat eerst een object is dat niemand lijkt te willen hebben, wordt door jouw creatieve brein een gewild item waar friends en family naar vragen ‘of je er niet ook eentje voor hen kunt maken’.
Met een beetje creativiteit en een likje verf tover je oude, saaie bloempotten om tot echte kunstwerkjes.
DIY: upcycle your old plant pot
Tools
- old flower pots(all types are suitable, both plastic and ceramic)
- Strong glue(e.g. epoxy adhesive or assembly adhesive)
- Primer
- acrylic paint
- acrylic paint pens
- pencil
- brushes
- sandpaper
Instructions
- Find two jars that fit well together. Try different combinations and turn them over: the bottom jar can just as well be upside down!
- Lightly sand the pots. This will help the paint adhere better. Then, clean everything thoroughly with a cloth.
- Glue the pots together. Let them dry thoroughly (check your glue's packaging for drying time).
- Paint the pots with primer. One coat is often enough, but feel free to slap on a second. Don't forget the edges!

- Fill the large areas with acrylic paint.
- Let everything dry thoroughly and finish with acrylic markers. Time for the fine details: lines, eyes, flowers, moustaches – go wild!
- Do you want to protect your artwork? Then apply a layer of varnish. Just make sure everything is completely dry, otherwise the markers might run.
- For the finishing touch: use up leftovers! Think of old sunglasses, beads, ribbons or a gold bow – you can also upcycle with your craft box.
