It's the same every year: on New Year's Eve you bake or buy a big batch of doughnuts a little too enthusiastically, and on New Year's Eve there are so many goodies you can't manage to eat them all. Or guests drop by with yet another cosy bag of oliebollen - also classic. Anyway, on 1 January you often find yourself with a bowl of oliebollen that overnight have become tough. But that is no problem! Because oliebollen consist of milk, flour, egg and sugar - ingredients you find in many baking recipes - you can make a surprising number of delicious things with them. Even when they are days old. Earlier, we tipped recipes for oil sponge cake and oliebollenbrood, and this year we are going for crispy waffles. Perhaps the easiest recipe we ever made from old oliebollen.



A super-easy oliebollen recipe: making oliebollen waffles from old oil balls. With Greek yoghurt, (vegan) honey, cinnamon and fresh fruit, they make a ge-wel-dig New Year's breakfast.

Oliebollenwafels: here's how to make them
Kitchenware
- bread knife and board
- sandwich iron (or grill pan, oven or airfryer)
Ingredients
- old oil balls
- toppings (such as cream butter, fresh fruit, Greek yoghurt & honey)
Instructions
- Make sure your appliance (sandwich iron, grill pan, oven or airfryer) is well hot.
- Meanwhile, slice/slice the old oliebol.
- Put them in a sandwich iron (2 minutes) or fry them alternately in a grill pan about 2 minutes each side. If you have an oven: bake at 180°C in about 5 minutes. In the airfryer: heat at 180°C and bake for 3-4 minutes until nice and crispy.
- These waffles are delicious with a little cream butter and icing sugar, but with a topping of fresh fruit or with Greek yoghurt and honey, you can turn them into a delicious New Year's breakfast.
