Old party toast? Bake French toast out of it!

Remember that festive cake from Christmas or Easter? Chances are you still have half of it in the cupboard, or you spot a ‘waste-me-not’ one in the supermarket. A shame to throw it away, because you can make something delicious with it: French toast! Really, in no time at all you can transform that last butt of stollen into a festive breakfast, a tasty lunch or even a dessert.

First aid for an old party toaster

The idea is not new: before, we tried make French toast from old oil balls. That worked surprisingly well. In fact, at home, we even liked that version better than the classic one with stale bread. Until we started working with party toast. It really surpassed everything! That is, of course, because of the spice in it, but the dough also performs perfectly. It completely soaks up the egg-milk mixture, just the way you like it. So are you left with a piece of stollen after the holidays or do you spot one that is just past its THT date? Do not hesitate, just take it. Because French toast from festive toasts are a treat for lunch and are also delicious as a dessert.

And is that party cake already past its THT date? No problem! THT stands for ‘best before’ and is mainly a quality guarantee, not an expiry date. As long as the cake still looks good, smells good and is not mouldy, you can use it. Supermarkets often set this type of product aside to prevent food waste. You can read more about exactly how that works with best-before dates in this article on THT.
