Paris tip: flea market Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen

Do you love flea markets, second-hand, antiques and vintage? Then the Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen is the place for you. You don't have to choose here, because you'll find absolutely everything at this enormous market. It's a kind of second-hand, antique, flea market village. This flea market is located in the north of Paris and is absolutely worth a visit. Make a full day of it and combine it with lunch at La Recyclerie and a walk through the adjacent Jardins du Ruisseau. That way, you'll have a lovely alternative day out in Paris all at once.

The Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen is the Paris flea market.

De Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen is not just a flea market: it's the largest antique and second-hand market in the world. It feels more like a village than a market with different sub-markets, each with its own atmosphere. From high-end design and antiques to junk bins where you really have to dig for a find. To give you an idea:

  • Approximately seven hectares in size (around ten football pitches).
  • More than two thousand traders.
  • Spread across fourteen different markets.
  • And you can easily walk 10,000+ steps here without seeing everything.

The market is located to the north of Paris, just outside the ring road, next to Saint-Ouen. So, it's ideal if you're staying in the northern arrondissements, such as the ninth, tenth, seventeenth, or around Montmartre. Good to know: the market is open every weekend, even on public holidays.according to their socials). Always check the current opening hours.

This is how to tackle the flea market

The Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen is so big that you quickly find yourself wandering from place to place and don't really know where to start. A shame, because it is precisely with a little focus that it becomes really fun. We were there right at 10:00 when the market just opened. Highly recommended, as it is still quiet then and you can look around at your leisure. Do you - like us - come mainly for fun and a morning's strolling? Then focus on a few streets. The best bits with lots of second-hand and curiosities can be found in the narrower streets. Navigate to Marché Paul Bert Serpette and then a little further on to Marché Vernaison. Another tip is to take a stroll into the covered antiques section to browse the beautiful second-hand items and vintage designer interiors. With price tags to match, but you really do feast your eyes here! That lap alone was good for over two hours of browsing. Conclusion: the Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen is truly an experience. You have never experienced this like this before. It feels like a kind of curio village where you walk from one surprise to another.

The world's largest flea market/brocante market/antique market is held every weekend in the north of Paris.

Lunch at La Recyclerie in Paris

For your greener to-do list: The Recycling Centre. A real tip for lunch, but also just for a look around. The place is amazing: it's in an old station and everything here revolves around reuse, repair, and sustainable living. For example, there's a second-hand clothing corner, a repair service, a bee hotel, compost areas, and the interior is also entirely circular. You see this reflected on the menu too. Lots of organic, seasonal, and plenty of vega(n) options. Inside it's already a beautiful place to sit, but when the weather's nice, you'll just want to go outside. Walk into the garden then. And don't think you've arrived yet, because when you think it stops, it just keeps going. The garden is narrow but very long and runs along the old railway line. You'll find cosy picnic benches, a vegetable garden, compost areas, and a bee hotel. It feels a bit like a green oasis in the middle of the city!

You can perfectly combine this green hotspot with the second-hand market. It's about a five to ten-minute walk from the Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen, so it's ideal.

The circular incubator of Paris is a five-minute walk from the market. So definitely go and explore and grab something delicious to eat or drink at La Recyclerie.

Walking through the Jardins du Ruisseau

When we were sitting in the garden at La Recyclerie, we saw something else nice across the way: Gardens of the Stream. This isn't a standard park, but a neighbourhood initiative started by residents in the late 1990s to revive a derelict piece of land. What was once an abandoned plot is now a narrow, elongated urban garden alongside the railway tracks, where locals garden, learn and organise activities together. You walk past flowers, vegetables and small paths, and all sorts happens here, from education to small events. This is precisely what makes it so enjoyable. It's not a neatly manicured park, but a place with a story and a bit of that raw, urban edge. In short, it’s nice to wander through if you've still got the energy. Or would you prefer a second round at the flea market?

Are you also going to the Saint-Ouen flea market?

From hidden alleyways full of curios to designer pieces you can only dream of, and from sustainable lunch spots to green neighbourhood initiatives: this place shows that Paris is surprisingly fun and versatile even on its fringes.
