Making applesauce from Dutch apples

From September onwards, it is party time again, because that is when the apples fall from the trees in the Netherlands. Perhaps you have a nice apple tree in your garden or you go apple-picking every year at an orchard near you. Before you know it, you will be drowning in apples. And then? Well, then you start making delicious applesauce out of them! Nothing beats home-made applesauce made from Dutch apples. And did you know that applesauce is also a is a very convenient substitute for egg for particularly sweet dishes? In short, you can never make too much applesauce.

Storage fruit

Did you know that apples are storage fruit? That means that they are harvested in September and October and can be sold for weeks and even months afterwards, if stored properly. Now you know why you sometimes find Dutch apples on the shelves far beyond the harvest period in October. Want to know more about this, then check our article on fresh fruit and vegetables. Be careful though, because you also regularly find apples from faraway countries on the shelves, such as Chile. These apples have come a long way and are therefore a lot less sustainable than that Dutch apple.

Basically, you can from each apple mash, but there are differences. Not every apple is equally suitable. The tastiest applesauce is made with fresh-sour apples that are not too hard, such as Jonagold, Elstar or Goudreinet.

Storage tip for apples

If you have a lot of apples at home after the harvest, the storage tip is to put them on a towel separate from each other, cool and dry. Make sure the apples cannot touch each other. This way, you can store apples at home for many weeks without having to make applesauce for an orphanage straight away.

Making applesauce in three steps. One storage tip is to vacuum. This keeps food fresh for much longer. We wrote one review on Airtender, the kitchen gadget I used to do this.
