Granola you can buy. You can also buy it organic to make a more sustainable choice. But you can also make your own granola very easily. And you probably already have (almost) everything you need. Want this too? Then check out this veggie budget recipe!
Homemade granola
Granola is a popular breakfast product. The supermarket shelf is full of tasty choices, but you can also make it yourself very easily. And that's what I'm going to show you. Actually, granola is nothing more than a mix of toasted oats, nuts, seeds and dried fruit, often sweetened with (vegan) honey. It has a crunchy texture and it gives your (vegetable) yoghurt breakfast a nice crunch. The variety of ingredients allows you to customise it to your own taste. Whether you opt for a traditional bowl of granola or a more modern version with a piece of cocoa or dried fruit, you can make it all by yourself at home just fine. And say it yourself: homemade is even tastier, isn't it?
This granola is also a budget tip: making it yourself will save you money. More tips for cheaper but sustainable grocery shopping, can be found here.
(vegan) honey with your granola
A key ingredient in granola is usually honey. And while honey seems like a beautiful and natural product, there is unfortunately a lot wrong with the bee business. It is not bee-friendly and it also threatens biodiversity because the many honey bees threaten the wild bees, while those wild bees are crucial for pollinating crops. Without wild bees, no food (security). Of course, you can choose the honey for your granola organically or buy it locally from a beekeeper you know is doing right by the critters and the planet. That's a very nice choice. But you can also choose vegan honey, made from plants and flowers (and sugar). A tasty tip is Vegablum, but there are many more types of vegan honey available. The best plant-based yoghurt?
Where do you put that handful of nuts? Which yoghurt do you choose to accompany your breakfast with granola? In the supermarket, you can also find more and more vegetarian variants for yoghurt. This is better for the planet and the animals. But which yoghurt is best for you? Volkskrant researched this and concludes that soy and oat yoghurt is the best choice if you look at nutritional values. Check out Volkskrant's nutrition guide.
