With jackfruit, you can make your fries hair salon vegan in no time. Culi editor Anne tried it out on her teenagers. Yes! ‘More variety in flavour, than the ordinary hair salon with shoarma,’ said her eldest. You can make friends at the table without having to eat animals with this sustainable hair salon fries.
Papatje hair salon
What is a Chips hair salon anyway? I have to be honest with you: this dish does not appear in the disc of five. Although the vegan version does come very close. But yes once in a while you just feel like such a tasty bite. Moreover, with this cheat meal score well with the kids. But what is it actually ‘a fries hair salon’?
This dish consists of a portion of freshly baked fries topped with shoarma meat, melted cheese, lettuce, garlic sauce and sambal. This ‘snack bar classic’ has long been a favourite among the many options in snackland. This fast-food dish originated in Rotterdam in 2003 when the owner of a local barbershop had a dish made at the El Viva snack bar with all the ingredients he liked. Since then, there have been many variations of patatje kapsalon on the market and it is widely sold at the snack bar around the corner.
Making your own vegan hair salon
You can very well make a vegan fries hair salon yourself at home. I deliberately choose to replace the shoarma with a vegan variant. In this case, I chose jackfruit, but you can also make the dish with the meat substitute vegetable shoarma or, even more delicious: oyster mushrooms seasoned with shoarma herbs! A vegan version of this dish is much better for the planet, your health and the animals. And last but not least: I like it at least as much. So why not?
Fries more sustainable
You can also choose the fries belonging to your vegan hair salon a little more sustainably. You have wonderful varieties of potatoes from the fresh Dutch soil with which you can make your own fries. Even sweet potato grows in our fields these days. But do you prefer convenience? Then go for a bag of frozen chips. Then you can easily measure out portions and freeze the rest. You will waste less.

Delicious, a Chips hair salon. But it is still a cheat dish. Then this one is a touch better.
Jackfruit as a meat substitute in your vegan hair salon fries
A word about the star of this dish: jackfruit! This is a fruit from India. In the Netherlands, they are offered canned in supermarkets. I usually use the ‘Young jackfruit in pieces’ from Fairtrade Original. You can season jackfruit however you like, so it goes with any dish. It has a meaty texture and easily absorbs any flavours you add. After marinating, let jackfruit stand for a few hours. This will make your vegan fries with jackfruit even tastier. I usually do this in the morning so that the flavour is more intense when I prepare the dish.

Vegan garlic sauce on your vegan potato fries with jackfruit
Sauces, of course, are also indispensable with your Chips. And especially garlic sauce. Unfortunately, this sauce is not easy to get vegan everywhere. But fortunately, you can very easily make it yourself (see ingredients in the recipe). With just a few ingredients, you can make a delicious fresh fresh garlic sauce as a topping on your vegan fries kapsalon with jackfruit. Eating healthy is very important to me, but for a fries with fresh lettuce and delicious homemade garlic sauce, I succumb. With the occasional vegan fast food option on the table, I also do my children a big favour. The vegan fries kapsalon with jackfruit was approved by all four of them, so it can be on the table here more often.
